Last week was London Climate Action Week. I went to several events including Reset Connect at Excel where I was a delegate at a Safeguarding Global Biodiversity seminar and met with many NGO’s and environmental project managers.

I also attended Nature Day at Kindred, Hammersmith presented by WWF and the brilliant Project Everyone.

The people I met were truly inspirational and world-class in their efforts towards reversing the damage we have done to our planet. I met Financiers, Ecosystem-Related Charities, NGO’s, Communications Agencies, Film Producers, Activists, Indigenous representatives all speaking with one common voice, largely focusing on the high-seas and water related concerns.

I remember back in September 2022, Greenpeace UK were dropping huge boulders into the ocean to create an underwater boulder barrier in the UK's South West to block destructive industrial fishing. But it takes the likes of Silverback Films and Open Planet (Ocean film with David Attenborough) to create a seminal moment in the history of planet protection by showing the destructive practices of trawling and presenting it to a global audience and in so doing drive consumers to demand change.

We live in a world which is largely based around financial structures. So, how do we protect the high seas from mining and excessive fishing when these activities drive revenue and provide livelihoods. Standard Chartered highlighted some of their financial instruments which can solve this issue by putting a value on global ecosystems. What is the value of a rainforest when you consider that the microclimate it recreates produces rain for local farmers. What is the value of that rainforest when it produces oxygen for the rest of the planet- there is a financial value right there.

So it may seem weird that the founder of an Eco-Conscious Luxury Online Department Store is taking a substantial amount of time out attending events like these. But the causes that these events highlight are exactly why I started Ateliers Verts in the first place. Selling eco-conscious products that last, is our small contribution towards helping the consumer buy better, for themselves and for the planet.

I’m passionate about global initiatives which protect the Earth on a local and global scale and that is why I do what I do.

I’d be really interested in hearing from anyone who has a job in a non-eco sector but also invests their spare time in eco initiatives. Please feel free to respond to this post.
