Hyrst Newcraft Desk

A beautiful ash office desk handcrafted by our social enterprise in Suffolk. A flatpack desk designed for the circular economy, the Newcraft Desk is made for the home office or study. Like all of our furniture, the desk is hand made from sustainably sourced solid wood.

Blending clean contemporary lines with traditional materials and craft, the compact Newcraft Desk sits comfortably in homes and offices old or new, large or small.

Whether employed as a computer desk or a more traditional writing desk, the Newcraft Desk has been designed and made for the world we want to live in.

The body is made from certified – and fully traceable – solid ash with an ash-faced birch-ply top, again fully traceable.

The self-assembly desk can be built and dismantled simply, ad infinitum. Taken from one house move to the next, passed down through the generations. Because it can be flat packed, the environmental impact of transporting the desk is minimised as much as possible. Similarly, parts can be replaced and recycled if ever needed.

The component parts of the Newcraft Desk are cut by prisoners at HMP Warren Hill in Suffolk, as part of a programme of rehabilitation jointly funded by Hyrst. We pay Warren Hill for the work, and they use the income to fund training qualifications that will reskill prisoners in preparation for their release. The desk parts are then shaped by our master furniture maker, Ben, up the road in Iken.

The grain and colour of ash can vary from tree to tree (and also within a single tree), so the subtle character of your desk may differ slightly from the one shown in the picture.

Materials: The solid ash used in the body of the Newcraft Desk is sourced from English Woodlands Timber, a hardwood timber merchant that specialises in supplying responsibly sourced, kiln-dried English and European timber. They take great care to ensure the wood they supply has been cultivated and harvested in a way that encourages woodland regeneration and biodiversity.

The desk top is made from ash-veneered birchwood ply, specially made for Hyrst in the UK from European birch and ash that has been sourced from responsibly managed woodlands.

The minimal fixings for the desk comprise 16 high-quality Allen (hex)-head bolts, which combine with traditional dry joins for easy assembly.

The Newcraft Desk is finished in Osmo polyx oil, a product based on natural plant oils and waxes. This finish retains the beautiful blond tones of the ash, and creates a hardwearing, breathable barrier to dirt and water.
