Lovely soft kissable lips are the best. Natural, full lips trump artificially injected lips.

Even if you don’t have the ‘perfect’ lips, you can maximise the appeal of what your parents gave you.

Diet

It all starts with a good diet. Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals with plenty of fruit, vegetables and protein will support healthy skin and lips.

Hydration

Staying hydrated, preferably with water, is crucial for overall health and it also plays a significant role in lip hydration

Avoid

If you lick your lips, the fluid will evaporate actually drying them out more – so that’s best avoided! Also avoid biting or picking your lips as this can lead to irritation and infection.

Common Lip Diseases

Cheilitis is the general term for lip inflammation (chapped lips) which can be caused by sun exposure, irritants, allergens, infections, eczema or other conditions such as herpes and in very rare cases, lip cancer. These diseases, and lip-licking, will cause the lips to become dry, red, itchy and scaly.

Regimen

At Ateliers Verts® we ensure that any products we research and sell should be quietly luxurious and eco-conscious and that obviously applies to our lip care products. Whilst we can do that, when it comes to lipcare, we are not dermatologists! However, there is  a significant amount of published information from dermatologists regarding this topic and and we'd like to share what we found with you:

1. Exfoliate. About once a week you should gently brush your lips with a wet towel or soft toothbrush to remove dead skin cells. After exfoliating, rinse your lips with warm water.

Or you could use a lip scrub stick like this Zao Lip Scrub Stick 482 who offer refills for their bamboo stick and who use 100% natural ingredients.

2. Moisturise.  To keep your lips in great condition you should apply a moisturising lip balm or ointment several times a day and before bed.

If you have very sensitive lips the Unisex La Roche-Posay Nutritic Lips could be the one for you although it's not very eco it's 100% hypo-allergenic, contains biolipids and is recommended by dermatologists.

3. Sun Protection. Use a lip balm with SPF 15 or higher to protect your lips from sun damage. We'd recommend a high SPF at altitude when you are skiing or climbing. If you are in the sun, reapply your SPF lip balm every two hours, especially after eating or drinking. It's the sun that usually causes the most harm.

4. Natural Ingredients.  Choose lip balms with natural ingredients like shea butter, jojoba oil, or vitamin E. Natural ingredients are better for you and the planet. If you chose natural products you don't need to pay attention to the content claims such as Phthalate Free, Plastic Free, Titanium Dioxide Free and Paraben Free!

Famous for having natural and organic ingredients the Neal's Yard Remedies and Shea Nut and Rose Hip Organic Lip Formula is made with 99.7% organic ingredients- although it's not vegan as it contains beeswax.

 5. Recycled, Recyclable or reusable packaging. Go for brands that use recycled materials or materials that can be recycled or a brand that offers refills to minimise packaging. Single-use plastic seems to be overly prevalent in the lip sector!

Fruu use recyclable tubes and their products contain waste-fruit extracts like their Fruu Watermelon Lip Balm It also contains soothing aloe vera.

6. Vegan and Cruelty-Free claims. Lip balms which are vegan and cruelty-free are standard. If these are the only eco-conscious claims being made, then we'd suggest that the product is not very eco at all. That said, beeswax is sometimes used in lip balms so that would prevent the product from being labelled as vegan.

If you prefer a pot rather than a stick, the Bamford Botanic Lip Balm has 100% organic ingredients such as healing arnica. They're BCorp certified too.
